Board of Medical Advisors

The Board of Medical Advisors is tasked with providing knowledge, insight and advice on the current management and future direction of all aspects of the company, including underwriting, litigation management, risk management and analysis of national trends.

The members of the Board of Medical Advisors are a cornerstone of MedMal Direct Insurance Company and represent many clinical specialties throughout the state of Florida.

The underwriting and litigation management experts at MedMal Direct often engage in dialogue with the experts on our Board of Medical Advisors, all to the benefit of the policyholder.

Scott A. Berger, MD

Dr. Berger completed both his undergraduate studies and his medical degree at the University of Miami, and the University Of Miami School Of Medicine respectively. He then completed an internship in general surgery at Jackson Memorial Medical Center before finishing his residency in anesthesiology and fellowship in pain management at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Berger is a diplomat of both the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Academy of Pain Management.

Dr. Berger has been practicing Anesthesiology and Pain Management in South Florida for twenty years and is regarded as an expert in the area of chronic pain and reflex sympathetic dystrophy. His many accomplishments include being appointed Chairman of the Governing Board and President of the Medical Staff of Pinecrest Rehabilitation Hospital as well as serving as Medical Director for Delray Outpatient Surgery & Laser Center. Currently, Dr. Berger is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of Pain Management Consultants in Boca Raton as well as Office Surgery Inspector for the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA). Dr. Berger has served as an expert for the U.S. Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Florida Board of Medicine, and the Department of Health as an expert in the prosecution of cases involving pain management and anesthesiology services. Dr. Berger was also recently appointed, by the Chief Medical Officer of Humana Health Plans, Inc. to Chair the Sub-Committee whose function was to determine on final appeal, whether a provider should remain, or be terminated by the insurance company, based upon the evidence presented at hearing.

Christopher J. Bosarge, MD

Dr. Bosarge received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine before completing an internal medicine internship at the Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, LA. He then completed his radiology residency at the UC Irvine Medical Center and a fellowship in Vascular & Interventional Radiology at the University of Arizona Health Science Center. Dr. Bosarge is board certified in Diagnostic Radiology through the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Bosarge has participated in several medical organizations including the Society of Interventional Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, Roentgen Ray Society, and the Louisiana Radiological Society. He serves as a Diplomat to the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Medical Examiners, and has earned a certificate of Added Qualification in Vascular & Interventional Radiology. Dr. Bosarge’s interests include endovascular reconstruction for arterial and venous disease and uterine fibroid embolization.

Ali Chahlavi, MD

Dr. Chahlavi holds a Bachelor’s degree with Honors in Biochemistry from the University of California – Davis, a Master’s degree with Honors in Biophysics from Georgetown University, and received his Medical Degree with Honors in research from Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Chahlavi completed a surgical internship and neurosurgical residency at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, eventually becoming Chief Neurosurgical Resident.

He has previously taught Neuroanatomy and Histology at Case Western Medical School and Georgetown University Medical School; and remains on staff at the University of Central Florida, Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Chahlavi’s work has been published in numerous journals and magazines including Neurosurgery, Cancer Research, Journal of Clinical Pathology, Principles of Neuro-Oncology, Journal of Neurosurgery, Spine Journal and many more.

Michael J. Cohen, MD

Dr. Cohen graduated from Swarthmore College before earning his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine. His surgical training at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he served as chief resident, lead to a Fellowship opportunity abroad. After studying at the Gloucestershire Royal Infirmary in England, Dr. Cohen returned to Ohio to complete his Vascular Fellowship at the St. Anthony Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.

In 1986, Dr. Cohen became a Founding Partner at Vascular Specialists of Central Florida, Inc. where he works to this day. He is actively involved with a multitude of medical associations at both the National and State level including the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Florida Vascular Society, and is a founding member of the International Society for Vascular Surgery.

Robert Colyer, Jr, MD

Dr. Colyer was born in Jacksonville, FL and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned his Medical degree from Emory University and completed his pediatric residency at Vanderbilt University before returning home to the practice of Pediatrics; joining the Carithers Pediatric Group in 1977. Board-Certified in Pediatrics since 1979, he has been actively involved as a leader in the community.

Dr. Colyer is a past president of the Florida Pediatric Society, the Youth Crisis Center, the Rotary Club of Jacksonville, and the Ronald McDonald House of Jacksonville. Dr. Colyer is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Florida and enjoys all aspects of Pediatrics, including clinical teaching, with a special interest in sports medicine and injury management. He is also the past president of Medical Staff at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Omar F. Dajani, MD

Dr. Dajani received his medical degree from the Damascus University School of Medicine in Damascus, Syria where he also completed an internship in Internal Medicine and Surgery. He then came to the United States in 1981 to perform an internship in Internal Medicine, a residency in Internal Medicine, a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease, and a third year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

Dr. Dajani has been practicing Internal Medicine and Cardiology in Jacksonville, Florida since 1987. Throughout his career as a physician Dr. Dajani has proudly served in many leadership positions. He is a past-President of the Clay County Division of the American Heart Association (1997-1998); and during his time with Orange Park Medical Center he has been Director of the Cath Lab, Medical Director of the ICU/CCU, and is currently the Chief of Cardiology. He is triple board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Nuclear Cardiology.

John A. Dietrick, MD

Dr. Dietrick completed his undergraduate studies at Xavier University before attending medical school at Wright State University where he was elected into the Medical Honor Society, Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his internship and surgical residency at Loyola University in Chicago then returned to Ohio to join the faculty at the University of Toledo Medical Center. Dr. Dietrick served as the Chief of Trauma Surgery and Associate Director of the Surgical Training Program. He was a founding partner of Toledo Surgical Specialists, Inc. and served as president until moving to Tampa to help establish a surgical weight loss program at Town & Country Hospital.

Dr. Dietrick currently serves as Medical Director of the Surgical Weight Loss Center at University Community Hospital in Tampa. Dr. Dietrick is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeons and the Hillsborough County Medical Association.

Robert Michael Loper, MD

Dr. Loper attended the University of Mississippi, earning Bachelor degrees in Biology and Chemistry before enrolling in the University of Mississippi, School of Medicine. Upon graduation, he completed his internship and residency in General Surgery and Head & Neck Surgery in the United States Navy at the Naval Regional Medical Center. He has been board certified in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (Pediatric and Adult) since 1983.

Dr. Loper currently serves as Chief of the Department of Surgery, Chief of the Department of Otolaryngology, and President-Elect of the Medical Staff at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL.

Thomas A. Marsland, M.D.

Dr. Marsland earned a Bachelor of Arts from Providence College before attending the Temple University School of Medicine for his Medical Degree. His subsequent Internship and Residency at Temple University Hospital was followed by an Oncology Fellowship at Tuft’s New England Medical Center and a Hematology Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Dr. Marsland is now double Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and has more than twenty six years of clinical research experience. He has previously served as the Medical Director of Hospice Collaborative at Pondville Hospital; Chief of Medicine and Chief of Staff at Orange Park Medical Center; President of both the Duval County Unit and Florida Division of the American Cancer Society; and as President and Treasurer of the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology – to name a few.

Dr. Marsland is the recipient of a number of awards including the St. Georges Award for Volunteerism from the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association Continuing Education Award, and being named as a Fellow of the American Cancer Society. He is an active member of the Duval County Medical Society, the Clay County Medical Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Practice Committee Oncologists, the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Cancer Society.

Gerard C. Mosiello, MD

Dr. Mosiello received his bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York and followed it with graduate studies at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a medical degree from the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. After completing a General Surgery residency at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Dr. Mosiello completed further residency training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

In addition to running his private practice, Tampa Palms Plastic Surgery, Dr. Mosiello serves as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of South Florida as well as Chief of Plastic Surgery at University Community Hospital. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of many regional and national medical societies including the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Tampa Bay Surgical Society, the Tampa Bay Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the Hillsborough County Medical Society, the Florida State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association.

Kent C. New, MD, PhD

Dr. New, originally from Alexandria, Virginia, completed his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. He then continued his studies at Georgetown University where he earned both an MD degree and a PhD degree in Microbiology and Immunology before moving to a surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. New previously served as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine before moving to the Spine & Brain Institute at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. He has won numerous awards and honors from institutions as varied as the American Epilepsy Society, Georgetown University, the ARCS Foundation, the Society for Neuroscience, and the National Research & Education Foundation among others.

Sean Orr, MD

Dr. Orr, a native of Washington, D.C., received his medical degree from the University Of South Florida, College Of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. He completed his postgraduate neurological training at the University of South Florida and served for two years as a fellow in Vascular and Critical Care Neurology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Orr has previously served as Chief Information Officer and Director of Research and Neuroimaging at the Alabama Neurological Institute in Birmingham, as well as an Assistant Professor of Neurology in the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Orr has been the Medical Director of the Stroke Center at Baptist Neurology since October 2004. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles and other pieces for scientific publication. Jacksonville audiences see him regularly on WTLV-TV’s Medical Monday series, where he is frequently interviewed about stroke. Nitesh N. Paryani, MD

Nitesh Paryani is a resident physician at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. A native of Jacksonville, Dr. Paryani attended The Bolles School, where he graduated as valedictorian of his class and also served as student body president. He completed his premedical studies at Princeton University, earning a bachelor of arts with Honors in political theory. Before enrolling in medical school, Dr. Paryani worked as a management consultant for a large multinational healthcare consulting firm based in Washington, D.C., focusing on federal healthcare payer systems. He is a recent graduate of the University of Florida, College of Medicine, where he graduated with Honors in research.

Dr. Paryani is an active member of the Duval County Medical Society, the Florida Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. He recently completed a term on the American Medical Association’s Council on Legislation, and is an active leader in the resident section of the Florida Medical Association.

Matthew Robertson, MD

Dr. Robertson attended the University of Virginia, School of Medicine, and then completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He then completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at UAB, where his research focused on gene therapy applications for ovarian cancer.

Dr. Robertson has been active in medical and scientific research since medical school and has authored multiple papers published in medical journals. Additionally, he maintains a special interest in endometrial cancer, including the laparoscopic management of this disease. Dr. Robertson practices in Jacksonville at Southeast Gynecologic Oncology Associates.
